Mental Health & Wellness

AIFS provides culturally based mental health services that help African immigrants and refugees overcome stigma, access care and build resilience — blending professional expertise with deep cultural understanding.

Why mental health matters

Language barriers, cultural taboos, discrimination, trauma and social isolation often keep immigrants and refugees from seeking help — even when they need it most. AIFS works to change this by offering culturally responsive counseling, raising awareness, training community members and connecting families to trusted mental health resources and providers.

African Community Mental Health First Aid (AC-MHFA)

AC-MHFA equips people to recognize signs of mental distress, offer initial support and connect someone to professional care.

  • Mental Health First Aid training for community leaders, parents and youth mentors
  • Cultural competency training for providers serving African immigrant and refugee communities
  • Outreach and awareness campaigns to break stigma and encourage help-seeking
  • Peer support groups for ongoing connection and shared healing

Social counseling and support

Culturally based social counseling helps individuals and families navigate personal, family and social challenges while adapting to a new environment.

  • Family and couples counseling, crisis intervention and conflict mediation
  • Guidance on social benefits, education opportunities and referrals to trusted partners
  • Group activities that help children build resilience and emotional strength
