Health program

Refugee & Immigrant Health

The AIFS Refugee and Immigrant Health Program addresses health, home safety and mental health challenges faced by African immigrants and refugees in Nebraska through a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategic Plan.

What we offer

Our health services

Families at an AIFS healthcare literacy workshop

Healthcare literacy

We help families understand and navigate the U.S. healthcare system. Culturally and linguistically tailored workshops — often in French and other African languages — cover preventive care, using health insurance and communicating with doctors.

Community health access and navigation

Trained Community Health Workers and Health Navigators guide families through every step: scheduling appointments, connecting with interpreters, finding affordable clinics and following up after visits.

Nutrition and chronic disease prevention

We promote healthy lifestyles while respecting cultural food traditions: balanced eating, portion control and healthier ways to prepare African dishes, plus screenings and coaching to reduce the risk of diabetes, hypertension and other chronic conditions.

Oral health

With local dental professionals, we make oral health more accessible through free or low-cost screenings, fluoride treatments and education on brushing, flossing and cavity prevention — including how parents can care for children’s teeth early.

Car seat safety

Certified technicians provide free car seat checks, hands-on installation support and child passenger safety education, so families choose the right seat, install it correctly and adjust it as children grow.

ProMoCare — Promotion of Mother’s Care

Our child and maternal health program supports expectant mothers and families with young children through prenatal and postnatal home visits, breastfeeding education, car seat safety checks and essential baby supplies.
